Unmanned level cross:Narrow escape for over 28 nursery children

07 Aug 2010

Alappuzha :Over 28 nursery children had a narrow escape today after the driver of a speeding train applied brakes in time to avoid ramming into their van which stalled at an unmanned level-crossing in the district.

The van, carrying the children to school, got stuck on the tracks moments before the Bangalore-Thiruvananthapuram weekly Express was to pass through the level-crossing at Karuvatta, police said.

The train's driver P M A Rahman and co-driver K C Shenit spotted the van and applied brakes, 'showing great presence of mind', a Railway official said.

The train stopped very close to the van.

'Had it not been for their timely action, it could have been a major tragedy,' a Divisional Railway spokesman said.

According to the van driver, the vehicle broke down suddenly as it reached the tracks.
