Bangalore blast accused Abdul Nasser Madani arrested amidst high drama

Aug 17, 2010

Abdul Nasser Madani was arrested by the Bangalore Police on Tuesday in the 2008 Bangalore blast case. He was arrested from his orphanage-cum-madrassa complex at Anwarassery in Kollam, about 71 km from Thiruvananthapuran.

The PDP leader, who spent eight years in jail for his alleged involvement in the Coimbatore blast case, was arrested hours before the deadline set by a Bangalore court on his non-bailable warrant expired. The Karnataka Police team was waiting in Kerala for the past 8 days to arrest Madani.

Bangalore deputy commissioner of police Omkaraiah executed the warrant against Madani with the help of Kerala Police. As Madani came out in a vehicle after afternoon prayers, a contingent of Kerala Police in riot gear blocked the vehicle facilitating his arrest by Karnataka officials. Kollam SP Harshita Attalluri led the Kerala Police team.

Madani said he was on his way to surrender to a local magistrate court when he was arrested. Maintaining that he was falsely implicated in the case as part of “a deep-rooted conspiracy”, he said he wanted to surrender as he had faith in the judiciary. Only his wife Soofiya and a personal aide were allowed to remain with him.

The PDP leader was listed as the 31st accused in an additional charge sheet filed by the police last month after confessions by suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba operative T Nazir, linking him to the Bangalore blasts. A Bangalore court had on June 15 issued an arrest warrant against Madani.

“I don’t think I will return from Karnataka. You now wait and see. Once I am there in Karnataka, you need not be surprised if my name features in a case in Gujarat or even the Mumbai bomb blasts and even in the World Trade Centre blast,” Madani said.

To protest the arrest of their leader, PDP said on Tuesday that the party would observe Wednesday as black day in the state. PDP working chairman Punthura Siraj said demonstrations and meetings would be held in different parts of the state as part of Black Day
