New Delhi : The Ministry of Environment has issued directions for stoppage of all work on construction of mangrove theme park at Kannur for violation of the provisions of Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 1991, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.
Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh said in a written reply that the Pappinisseri Eco-Tourism Society violated the law by causing destruction of mangroves, construction(s) by reclamation on mangrove land and construction of infrastructure(s) in inter tidal area.
Based on a site visit report submitted by the Regional Office, Bangalore of Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Directions under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 have been issued to stop all activities relating to the park, and also to Chairman, Kerala State Coastal Zone Management Authority to enquire into the matter and to submit a report.
As per the information received from the Kerala Government, it has ordered closure of the park based on the Directions issued by the Ministry.
