Sindhu Joy Chakkungal is a politician from Kerala formerly with Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M) and Students Federation of India(SFI). She resigned from CPI (M) on 24 March 2011. She also resigned from the National Vice Presidentship of SFI and from the district committee of CPI (M).[1][2] She is also a former President of Kerala State Unit of SFI.[3]. After quiting CPI (M) she has joined Indian National Congress.
Sindhu was arrested several times during her political career. In 2006, when she was State president of SFI, Sindhu was arrested on the basis of cases registered against her and other activists in connection with various political agitations conducted by the Left Democratic Front. The arrest lead to strong protest from the All India Democratic Women's Association. In 2009, Joy was arrested several times and put into jail .She resigned from CPI (M) in 2011 alleging that she was being continually neglected by the Party . She has contested and lost as CPI (M ) candidate against Ommen Chandy in Puthupally in 2006 Assembly Elections and Prof. K V Thomas in Ernakulam in Parliament Election.
